One of those days in New Zealand: No thermals but wind, cliffs and the ocean! Fasten your seatbelts and enjoy the highspeed coastal flight in a sailplane. Spectacular landscapes included! Special thanks to Smeg NZ and Auckland Gliding Club for making this happen! Auckland Gliding Club: https://www.instagram.com/soaringauck…

Is it scary to fly at the coastline without proper outlanding options and without motor? Yes, for sure! But it is endless fun to fly in this beautiful landscape. From the objective point of view the risk of an outlanding is marginal. You really need to check the wind forecast properly and ask the locals for advice. The wind is a constant factor, not to compare with pulsating thermals. A huge shoutout to Smeg NZ and Auckland Gliding Club for making this happen!

Highspeed Lowlevel Glider Chase | Westcoast New Zealand

Great memories of a joyflight back in January with Tim! More than happy that I was able to make this trip some months ago.

Sport of Kings – Gliding along the summit ridge of Mount Cook New Zealand

Gliding over the top of Mount Cook by Gavin Wills and GlideOmarama.com. with a Duo Discus glider and GA200 Fatman tow plane. Shot by Natural History Ltd for a TVNZ TV documentary on Mount Cook National Park. Normally we soar to the Mount Cook summit ridge from Omarama without the tow-plane! That takes 1 to 2 hours depending on conditions. Best conditions for the soaring the summit ridge include light west or north west wind (15 to 30 knots) with some wave development to the south. Wind on this day was about 10 knots whispering over the 2km long summit ridge which enabled us to remain there as long as we liked! Soaring the summit ridge of Mount Cook is one of the truly great glider flights on the planet.

New Zealand is one of the most spectacular gliding place in the world and Omarama is an unique airfield to spend the holiday. www.glideomarama.com

Omarama soaring flight to Mt Cook, New Zealand

While on vacation in February 2016 on New Zealand’s South Island, I took a soaring flight with one of Glide Omarama’s flight instructors, Dan McCormack. We enjoyed a 3 hour flight, utilizing thermal, ridge, and wave lift to fly from Omarama to Mount Cook and back, topping out around 13,000 feet. Mount Cook is the highest point in New Zealand at over 12,000 feet. If you are ever on the South Island of New Zealand, and are not prone to motion sickness, I highly recommend spending a day going to Omarama to take Glide Omarama’s “long flight”. http://www.glideomarama.com
